Always Be prepared!
It is important to take safety precautions when around fire. Whether the snow is falling, the wind is blowing or the sun is shining, use these simple guidelines for grilling food safely.
Grilling Safety Tips:
- FIRE EXTINGUISHER – Have a fire extinguisher near by. Our Lang BBQ Competition team always has 2 fire extinguishers on hand.
- SAFE LOCATION – Place your Lang BBQ Smoker at least 10 feet away from your house, garage or anything that can easily catch on fire.
- SAFE FOUNDATION – Try to place your Lang BBQ Smoker on ground surface that is flat and cannot burn, i.e.- concrete, asphalt, or dirt. If this is not possible be extra careful if the grass is dry or there are lots of dry leaves and sticks.
- SAFETY ZONE – Establish a safety zone around the smoker cooker and keep children away.
- CATCH – Place a catch under your smoker to catch the grease coming out of the smoker. It’s called a “catch can” – recycle/re-use any old coffee can or other cans around the house.
- DISPOSING OF BURNING EMBERS – let the embers cool before disposing. Consider using a burn barrel. If traveling at a competition follow the competition rules for disposal. If you’re at a public BBQ competition event, the event usually supplies a place to put your hot ash and grease.
- SPLITTING FIREWOOD SAFETY – Wear eye protection and dress properly (think boots, pants and work gloves – not shorts and flip-flops). Use appropriate safety precautions for axes or chain saws.
- STARTING FIRE IN FIREBOX – When starting a fire, open the fire box door, the dampers, and cooker doors open and tilt up in order to create a draft. Use split dry wood. Some people start the fire in the firebox with a propane starter, kindling, lighter fluid, or charcoal. Once the smoker is drafting properly you can close the doors and dampers.
- And … NEVER leave your Lang BBQ Smoker unattended.
