Elizabeth from Gerogia asked us, “How many pork butts are needed to feed 100 people?”
I am thinking 12 butts. Does anyone have any experience with this situation who can comment?

I am doing smoked pulled pork for a grad party. How many 8 lb. pork butts will I need?
I may have 60 teen there, but I always overkill big time. I am doing regular hamburger sized buns and there will be a lot of other stuff. There are also three other grad parties that day – I’m sure with food. They will eat, but I’m just not sure how much.
I am doing the same this year! Can you tell me how many butts? How much slaw? I am sooo lost! I am expecting to feed approx 100 ppl as well. Thank you in advance for any help!!! 🙂
25-33 pounds of butt is not enough – that would be fine for COOKED food, but to figure for raw, double that.
Sam’s Club, one case – about a buck a pound and you got it nailed.
Chicken does make a cook stretch, but it has not been popular lately.
If you are going to be cooking butt (read long cook times), put a couple briskets on there – you will be pleasantly surprised.
For pulled port you should figure 1/4 to 1/3 lb per person; so 25 to 33 lbs.
Thanks Guys for your replys.
I am sure they will be a Big Help.
The average pork butt (Sams Club/Costco) weighs approx 8 pounds. When cooked, you will end up with approx 50 % yield, or 4 pounds of meat per butt. You want to feed your guests a min of 5 ounces each, especially if they are pulled pork sandwiches. With that being said, I would say you would need to start out with aproximately 67 pounds raw or 8 butts. That should be plenty to cover you in case there are a few big eaters. If you have additional meats, you could do a few less, but since your cooking for an extended period of time, why not do all 8 and let your guests enjoy any leftovers.
When is the party?
Is that all you are having? Pulled pork for 100 people? I havea party every year for about 100-110 people. I get 6 pork butts ( around 7-8 lbs. each) I also get about 35 lbs. of chicken thighs. Of course burgers and dogs for the kids. I always have at least 2 butts and half the chicken left over. Oh and I cook it all on My Lang mbile 60 deluxe with the warmer. Hope that helps.
